Maybe I’m a romantic at heart but one of the best ways to eat a piping hot bowl of delicious soup is by sitting around the fire with the ones that you love.
This soup recipe is not only simple, but it’s one that you’re going to have on your radar to make multiple times before the cold weather is through. Make certain to keep these ingredients on hand so you can whip up a batch in a moment’s notice when that craving hits!
Instant Pot German Potato Soup Recipe
Ingredients:
10 red potatoes; peeled (can use any type of potato that you’d like)
2 carrots; diced small
2 celery stalks; diced small
1 white onion; diced small
1/2 small head of cabbage; chopped
1 tablespoon marjoram
1 teaspoon paprika
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons pepper
1 – 28 oz container vegetable broth
4 cups water (more for 8qt Instant Pot)
*parsley for topping
How to Make Instant Pot German Potato Soup:
Start by peeling your potatoes and dicing them up. Next, dice up your carrots, celery, and your onion. Lastly, chop up your cabbage. (this recipe works best with white cabbage)
After you have everything diced up, add the potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, and cabbage into your Instant Pot. Pour in your vegetable broth and add in the water, too. Next, stir in your seasonings.
Once done, lock your Instant Pot lid in place and set your valve to seal. Turn on the Instant Pot and set the high-pressure setting for 10 minutes.
Once the Instant Pot is finished, it’s time to release the pressure. At this point, test it and add in more salt or other spices if needed.
We suggest serving this soup with a nice crusty bread. For a bit of fresh greens, top it with parsley. (I love grabbing a bunch from our Aerogarden Herb Garden in the kitchen.)
What potato is best for soup?
While any type of potato is fine, the top three potatoes to use for soups are as follows:
- Red potatoes
- Yukon Gold Potatoes
- Sweet potatoes (only if you’re making a sweet soup)
But in all reality, for this simple soup recipe, just use whatever you have on hand.
Can you freeze potato soup?
Technically, you can. But it’s really not recommended because the texture will be a bit different for this process. Potatoes don’t tend to unthaw and hold their shape or consistency so it would be a bit mushy once it was time to reheat and eat.
Should you peel potatoes for your potato soup?
Yes, it helps. It’s hard to get all the grime and dirt off of the potatoes, so peeling them is the best bet. It’s not a hard process to do so it really won’t take up that much of your time.

What does Kartoffelsuppe mean?
As we mentioned, the word for this soup in German is Kartoffelsuppe. It’s simply the combination of the German word for potato, kartoffel, and the word for soup, suppe. I think it’s a lot more fun to say than potato soup!
