“Santa, don’t forget the Grinch. I know he’s mean and hairy and smelly, and his hands are cold and clammy, but I think he’s kinda… sweet.” — Cindy Lou Who.
If Cindy Lou Who can see the good in that mean old Grinch, I think we can too! He is a character we all love to hate and becomes a sort of hero by the end of the story.
How To Make Grinch Cupcakes
There are two basic ways you can make your Grinch cupcakes; from scratch or a cake mix.
If you want to make them from scratch, I would recommend using this Sugar Cookie Cupcakes recipe and making a few changes, like (optionally) using green food coloring in the batter and leaving off the peppermint sticks and white sparkling sugar.
If you choose to make an easy Grinch cupcakes recipe from a cake mix, I would recommend using a white cake mix that calls for egg whites rather than the whole egg. This way the batter will tint a better green than a yellow cake mix.
For the frosting you can use our buttercream frosting recipe or you can even use white canned frosting and tint it green as well. This is going to be the least complicated and quickest route, but I do love that homemade frosting.
Why Do People Use A Big Red Heart For Grinch Recipes?
As the classic story goes, the main character, The Grinch, has a heart that is two sizes too small. Only after he meets Cindy Lou Who does his attitude toward Christmas and toward humanity slowly begin to change and then his heart grows by three sizes!
This of course is where that iconic decoration that is almost always seen in a Grinch recipe or decorative craft – or basically anything Grinch – comes from!
How To Make Grinch Cupcake Toppers with Chocolate Hearts
Easy Grinch Cupcake Topper ingredients:
- cupcakes – use your recipe, boxed mix, or premade cupcakes
- white frosting – use our buttercream frosting recipe or canned frosting
- red candy melts
- Yellow and green food coloring
- Frosting piping bags
- Wilton 1A and Wilton 2 icing/frosting tips
Place the Wilton 2 icing tip in a piping bag and snip the end off with scissors. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 1: Place your candy melts in a microwave-safe and heat for 30 seconds. Remove and stir. If not completely melted, heat for an additional 10 seconds and stir well, repeating until melted.
Step 2: Pour candy into a piping bag, and use it to draw hearts on the parchment paper, then squiggle lines to fill in the heart.
Make 24 hearts, about 1 inch in diameter. Refrigerate to set.
Step 3: Add frosting to a bowl and add 4 drops of green food coloring.
Next, add 8 drops of yellow food coloring and mix well.
Step 4: Place the Wilton 1A frosting tip in a piping bag and snip the end off with scissors. Add the frosting.
Step 5: Pipe frosting onto the cupcakes, starting in the middle, moving towards the edge, then circling clockwise around the cupcake, then again, and then into the middle.
Step 6: Remove hearts from the refrigerator and place one on each cupcake.
