This adorable heart shaped sign craft is an easy and affordable way to add some farmhouse valentine decor to your home!
The farmhouse style of decorating is all the rage right now. Even I have caught the bug for this rustic way to spiff up my home. I have found several great farmhouse decor ideas that have added a warmth that my kitchen was missing.
What is Farmhouse Style Decor?
You may have heard words like vintage, rustic, classic, or modern when referring to the farmhouse look. This style is rooted in the times of the early homesteaders in America. Their homes were simple and minimal, with hand-made sensible furnishings.
This look is inspired by a farm and its surrounding buildings, including the barn. Many of the farmhouse-style wall and home decor ideas come from both the inside and outside of these structures.
What Are Some Distinctive Traits of the Farmhouse Style?
If you are shopping for a few farmhouse-inspired additions to your home, you don’t have to look far! Almost every store will have a good amount of table and wall pieces for every room of your home. Wood was the main element in the homes of the early days of the settlers.
It is no surprise many of the knick-knacks are made from rustic wood, especially weathered barn wood. In a farmhouse-style home, you will usually find paints, wood finishes, and textiles in warm neutral tones. A creamy white is wildly popular. I just changed my bedroom curtains and bedding to this palette.
What is the Difference Between Classic and Modern Farmhouse Decor?
Although similar, there are distinct differences between the traditional and modern farmhouse design styles. Both themes are based on a comfortable, relaxed vibe. You will find both using the fundamentals of the farmhouse style, like natural wood and fabrics, with a comfortable, warm, and cozy feel.
When it comes to the modern side, you will find more sleek and clean lines. Many modern farmhouse homes will include stainless steel, natural-looking wood, and polished stone, like granite or marble.
Glossy looks, modern lighting, and lots of open space are indicative of the modern rather than the rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Although a subdued palette of cream, white, light greens, and blues can be found in a modern farmhouse lookbook, you will see more bold colors that aren’t popular with the classic style.
Are Cottage and Farmhouse Style Decorating the Same?
Cottage and classic farmhouse decor have similar, yet contrasting aspects; just like the modern and traditional farmhouse. The similarities between the two are the use of weathered woods, natural fabrics, and a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The cottage look offers a more feminine feel to a room with plenty of ruffles. You will find lots of colors and patterns which are often mixed throughout the room. You may find a floral window treatment with a plaid sofa and striped wallpaper.
Heart Shaped Sign Craft
Here are the supplies you will need to make your Valentine’s Day farmhouse wall decor.
(We found items marked with * at Dollar Tree, but they’re also all available on Amazon or other craft stores.)
- 1 Heart-shaped “Heart Grapevine” form*
- 14 craft sticks
- 1 bunch of small plastic roses*
- Twine*
- White acrylic paint (used Apple Barrel – Snow White)
- Brown acrylic paint (used Apple Barrel – Brown Oxide)
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue stick
How to make your farmhouse Valentine’s Day heart craft:
Step 1: Line up 11 craft sticks horizontally. Glue the remaining 3 sticks vertically, keeping them the same width apart. This will hold the other sticks together. This is the base for your floral heart decorative items.
Step 2: Turn the base over and paint it white.
Step 3: While the base is still wet, you are going to distress it a bit by dipping your brush into the brown paint. Lightly coat the base with brown paint. Allow to dry for 5 minutes. Wipe off your brush and dip it into the brown paint again. Use the brown paint to darken the base up a bit, paying attention to coat the edges.
Step 4: Wipe off brush again and go back in with white in the center. Set the base aside and dry for about an hour.
Step 5: Glue the heart to the base. Press gently until the glue has dried, about 30 seconds or so.
Step 6: Pull the roses from the stems and randomly glue them on the inside and outside rim of the heart.
Step 7: Cut off the small tips of the leaf stems, as well as individual larger leaves.
Step 8: Glue them randomly around the roses and the heart.
Step 9: Cut a piece of twine to about 6/7” or to the size you would like. Turn over and add a little glue to one top corner and carefully glue one end of the twine. (Use another craft stick to press down so you don’t get burned!) Add more glue over it to secure it. Once that has hardened, do the same to the other side.
Once completely dry and hardened, you can hang up and enjoy!
