These easy Paper Roll Seed Starters are a great way to put those paper rolls to work and start your garden inexpensively. Not only are you reusing something that you would normally throw away or recycle, but they make amazing seed starters! You simply plant the whole planter in your garden and never have to disturb the roots of your seedlings!
This Paper Roll Seed Starter Craft is such an awesome way to repurpose all those empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls! Not only are you recycling something that you would normally just throw away (or actually recycle), but you are also making something useful to help grow a bountiful harvest in the garden!
Paper rolls are great for seed starting because you can simply plant them in your planting hole. As time goes on, they will decompose right into the soil. This saves opening up each of the seedlings and disturbing the delicate roots that are forming. Obviously, this gives the plants a boost right off the bat!
This Paper Roll Seed Starter Craft couldn’t be simpler to do either. Just save up your paper rolls and follow the super easy instructions.
I am also loving the cute little plant markers made with the mini popsicle sticks. Honestly, this is such a fun and easy project how can you resist?!
If you love recycling everyday items to make fun planters, be sure and check out our DIY Sock Cozy Upcycled Tin Can Panters! They are super cute and super easy too! In addition, you are recycling another item that would normally be thrown in the trash. It is a win for planting and a win for the environment!
For other ways to start you seedlings, you can try egg carton seed starters or newspaper seedling pots.
Paper Roll Seed Starter Craft
Materials Needed:
Box/crate (We used a wooden tangerine crate)
Potting Soil
20 Paper rolls
Mini Craft Sticks
Mini shovel/spoon
Scissors
Pen
How to make these Paper Roll Seed Starters:
At the bottom of each roll, make two ¾ inch cuts across from each, then one cut in the center of each of the halves you created. So basically, you divide the bottom of each roll into four equal parts.
Fold the 4 flaps as you would fold the flaps of a moving box.
Fill each paper roll with potting mix and align them in your box/crate.
Using your pen write the names of the plants on the mini popsicle sticks.
Put in your seeds, one plant per roll and water.
Insert the popsicle sticks in their designated areas.
Put your Seed Starter Kit near a light source to allow it to grow until your garden is ready to receive the plants. A great option is using a grow light to ensure that you have enough light.
When you’re ready to move your seedlings outdoors, simply unfold the bottom and plant the whole thing in the ground. The cardboard will decompose into the soil.
DON’T FORGET TO WATER THEM REGULARLY!

That’s a fun and easy idea. My husband has some plants downstairs that are growing. He’s had to up their container sizes because they were too small. It’s too cold in Nebraska for planting at this point.
