Expert Tips:
What kind of milk is best for hot chocolate pops?
You can actually use any type of milk for hot cocoa pops, but the higher the fat content the creamier your pops will be.
Skim milk will make a lower calorie and lower fat treat, but whole milk, or even half and half, will make a super creamy pop.
Another option for milk is to use sweetened condensed milk, which can make a sweeter AND creamier pop. You can buy it ready-made or else use our homemade sweetened condensed milk recipe.
Ghirardelli Squeeze Bottles – Caramel, Chocolate & White Chocolate
What kind of chocolate syrup should I use?
Again, it’s really up to personal choice. We used Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup for this recipe since it’s a classic.
But you can use your favorite brand of syrup, flavored chocolate syrup or even change it up with a white chocolate or caramel syrup like these Ghirardelli syrups.
Does it matter what marshmallows I choose?
Your standard mini marshmallows are the easiest to use and DELICIOUS! If you don’t have mini marshmallows, you can cut larger marshmallows into pieces, but that marshmallow cutting can get a bit messy.
To change things up, you can also try stirring in Marshmallow Fluff before freezing.
Other Hot Chocolate Pop Varieties:
Besides the variations we described with different milks, syrup or marshmallow fluff, you can add in other flavors as well. If you like to stir your hot chocolate with a peppermint candy cane, you can add in a drop of peppermint extract or a bit of crushed peppermint candies.
If you want your pops to be extra chocolatey, you can add in some mini chocolate chips – just be aware that the chocolate chips may fall to the top of the popsicles since they are heavier. Another option is to use melted chocolate and stir that into your milk mixture before filling the pop molds.
If you have packets of cocoa mix on hand, but no chocolate syrup, you can prepare your hot chocolate, let it cool and then use that in place of the milk and syrup, it just might not have the same deep chocolate flavor.
