I seriously think this sandwich is as good as any KFC fried chicken sandwich recipe or Burger King crispy chicken sandwich recipe!
Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich Recipe
Yield: 4 sandwiches
Ingredients needed:
4 burger buns
4 halved chicken breasts
4 pieces lettuce
1 medium tomato, sliced
4 tbsp mayonnaise, or your favorite burger spread
Vegetable oil, as needed
Marinade mixture ingredients needed:
1 ½ c buttermilk
1 medium shallot, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 small jalapeño, sliced
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
Seasoned flour mixture ingredients needed:
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp smoked paprika, or regular paprika
¼ tsp cayenne pepper, or more if desired
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
How to make this yummy Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich!
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all marinade mixture ingredients and mix well. Then put chicken breasts in, tightly wrap, and marinade for at least 3 hours. The chicken can be marinated overnight.
2. In another mixing bowl, whisk together flour mixture ingredients. Coat marinated chicken breasts in seasoned flour mixture. Return it back to marinade mixture to have a quick dip. Then coat the piece again with flour, make sure all sides of chicken cover thoroughly.
3. By double coating chicken, we create an extra crispy outer layer for the chicken breast.
4. Use a tong or your hand (whichever convenient for you), carefully lower coated chicken breasts in hot vegetable oil (make sure your oil is around 350-375F before deep frying chicken).
5. Add 1 more pieces to the frying pan. Don’t overcrowd the pan with too many chicken breasts or they’ll become soggy.
6. When the chicken is done cooking, approximately 5 to 8 minutes, put on a plate lined with oil absorbed paper.
7. Assemble: cut burger buns in half and spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on both halved buns. Then add lettuce on the first half, followed by crispy chicken (lightly drizzle your favorite complimented sauce if desired or keep it simple with a pinch of salt and pepper on top), slice of tomato, and the second half of the bun.

What’s the best chicken part to use for a crispy fried chicken sandwich?
I prefer to use a boneless chicken breast because of its nice looking interior and the even texture and taste, but others prefer boneless skinless chicken thigh. The choice is up to you.
Can you make fried chicken without buttermilk?
Making fried chicken with buttermilk makes it extra juicy and delicious, but there is an easy alternative! If you don’t have buttermilk available or your store is out of it (like mine was last week!) it’s easy to make your own buttermilk. All you need is regular milk and either lemon juice or vinegar.
How else can you top a crispy chicken sandwich?
We like the classic mayo, lettuce and tomato, but you can go wild with toppings. Some ideas are:
- honey mustard
- BBQ sauce
- bacon
- guacamole
- salsa
- sliced or shredded cheese
