These fun Good Dinosaur Cookies start with a sugar cookie dough that becomes a cute dinosaur foot!
If you have been following along and reading our posts about the making of The Good Dinosaur, you know how excited we are about the movie coming to theaters on November 25th.
The movie asks the question “What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?” Through the story of The Good Dinosaur we travel with an Apatosaurus named Arlo as he makes a human friend, Spot, on a difficult journey filled with dinosaurs, danger and the natural beauty of vast wilderness landscapes. On the trek Arlo learns to confront his fears and see that he perhaps is a little tougher than he originally thinks.
To get us ready for the movie, we created this fun The Good Dinosaur cookies recipe! It’s designed to look like the bottom of Arlo’s foot – complete with his not-so-little dino toes.
These cookies are super fun to make and the little ones can help mixing the dough and rolling it into balls for the feet and the toes.
They’re fun for any day and a hit at parties. Since dinosaur is a popular when thinking about first birthday themes for boys, these dino cookies will fit right in – but they’re loved by kids of all ages!
The Good Dinosaur Cookies Recipe
2 ½ cups all purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 cup sugar
1 ¾ sticks unsalted butter, softened (14 Tbsp)
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
green food coloring
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together the flour, salt and baking powder. In a separate, large bowl beat together the sugar and butter on medium speed about 5 minutes or until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla and the eggs one at a time. Turn down the mixer to slow and slowly add in the flour mixture just until combined.
Divide the dough into fourths and remove one fourth from the bowl. Add several drops of food coloring to the dough and beat until color is evenly distributed. Add color until you get the shade of green you like.
Roll the green dough into balls about 1″ across. Roll the uncolored dough into little balls about ⅓″ across. Put the green balls about 2″ apart on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a baking mat. Place 4 of the little balls at the top side of each green ball. Using a flat-bottomed glass or bowl, press down on each cookie to flatten.
Bake approximately 11 minutes (rotating the baking sheet once) or until just barely beginning to brown. Don’t overcook! Let cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet and then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely before handling.
