Replace the packets with this easy-to-make Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe! It’s perfect for dip, meatloaf, burgers, soup, potatoes and more.
Onion soup mix is one of those things that is super handy to keep in the kitchen for making a party dip in a hurry or spicing up dishes like meatloaf and burgers.
But there is an alternative to those little packets you buy at the store! It’s easy to do with our Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe.
While I have used plenty of those packets in my life, there are plenty of reasons to ditch them. While they’re generally inexpensive, they are still multiple times more expensive than putting together your own mix.
And, have you ever stopped to look at the ingredients on the side of the box? There are lots of things in there that I would just as soon not be putting into my food – things like caramel color, maltodextrin and two things I don’t even know what they are, but would just as soon skip – disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate.
So, with all that in mind, we have a super easy Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe to mix up and store in your kitchen.
You can store it in a simple glass jar – one that you have reused from other foods is fine – or I like these glass jars with wire snap lids that keep the mixture well sealed and fresh. It even makes a great gift when you tie a pretty bow around the jar!
Use this Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe for making onion dip, French onion soup, meatloaf, burgers, roasted potatoes – you name it!
To make onion dip I mix a 5 tablespoons with one cup non-fat Greek yogurt and 1 8 oz brick of neufchâtel cheese. It makes a delicious, low fat dip!
If you miss that artificial color and think your dip looks too light, add a few drops of worcestershire, soy or tamari sauce.

I live in Nepal and can’t get a lot of these things, but maybe someone will bring me a care package. Or maybe I’ll dry my own onions. I think I’ll add turmeric to give it some color and immune system boost.

Onion soup mix is such a yummy addition to so many recipes, but it’s really hard for me to find gluten free versions (which I have to have at my house). I’m so excited to try this. All the flavor, and no gluten! Yeah!
