There is something to be said about holding a delicious all-in-one treat in one hand! With the holidays right around the corner, this sweet fruit-filled Air Fryer Christmas Tree Hand Pies Recipe is a must-have on your menu.
I’ll admit, I love a good pie, and if I can hold it in my hand, even better! That’s why I love hand pies.
Is It A Hand Pie Or A Turnover?
Most popular in the south, these portable treats can be found in kitchens, church picnics, and restaurant menus.
Typically deep-fried and filled with fruit, like this cherry hand pie recipe, this food can be made in a variety of ways with many fillings.
And, after Christmas is over you can continue making these treats with a different shape of cookie cutter or by just cutting the dough in squares with a knife.
A question that has been asked a million times is “What is the difference between a hand pie and a turnover?” The confusion is legit as they are very similar.
The main difference between a hand pie and a turnover is the crust, with turnovers usually being made with puff pastry and a hand pie using a pie crust.
What Fillings Can You Use For A Hand Pie?
Many people are familiar with sweet and savory hand pie fillings, but cream and custard are also popular. Blueberry, Apple, Peach, and Lemon are perfect for your fruit hand pie recipe.
If you’re in the mood for a savory hand pie, meats, vegetables, spices, and potatoes are delicious options to fill your pie.
For a sweet tooth craving that needs to be filled, cream or custard is perfect. A custard filling is usually baked, while a cream filling is not.
I love to pipe in smooth vanilla, coconut, or Boston cream into my hand pie recipes.
If you are in the mood for custard, anything from a traditional egg baked to a pumpkin, chocolate, or rhubarb.
Can You Make Hand Pies In An Air Fryer?
Absolutely you can! The biggest attraction of using an Air Fryer to cook your hand pie recipes is the ease and reduced cook times.
Because an oven bakes from the bottom, your pies will have a more browned bottom than those made in your Air Fryer. While this is true, I feel you still get a crispy and nicely baked treat with air fryer hand pies.
