Some stories stay with you long after the credits roll. The Optimist, a deeply moving film inspired by real events that tells the story of Holocaust survivor Herbert Heller and the unexpected power of connection and resilience, is one of those.
The Holocaust, derived from the Greek word for “burnt offering”, is a famous event that marked history through the scars it has imposed on society. Through the horrors we’ve heard about persecution and genocide, it has forever been a horrendous story to tell.
The Optimist, heading to theaters on March 11, 2026, brings an emotional true story about a Holocaust survivor, a friendship he forged and, as Producer Jeanine Thomas says, “a fulfillment of a promise to honor his truth.”

About the Movie
Based on a remarkable true story, The Optimist follows Herbert Heller, a Holocaust survivor who spent decades carrying the trauma of his painful past in silence. At just 15 years old, Herbert escaped the Auschwitz-Birkenau death march. He lived to tell the horrific tale of his survival. But for more than sixty years, he rarely spoke about his experience. When he finally breaks his silence, he forms a powerful and unexpected friendship with Abby, a troubled teenager struggling with her own challenges.
Through their unlikely bond, both discover healing, hope, and the life-changing power of truly being seen and heard.
Film Stars
The film stars Stephen Lang as Herbert and Elsie Fisher as Abby, delivering heartfelt performances in this intimate story about trauma, memory, and resilience.
Directed by Finn Taylor and produced by Jeanine Thomas, the film was developed over more than a decade and honors Herbert Heller's legacy as an educator who shared his story with thousands of students before his passing in 2021.
The ensemble cast also includes Luke David Blumm, Leah Pipes, Ben Geurens, Ursula Parker, Slavko Sobin, Stella Stocker, Oskar Hes, and Robin Weigert.
Impact Beyond the Screen
More than its profound promise to share Heller’s truth with the world, The Optimist also gives back to the causes rooted in its heart. It advocates for KAVOD, a support system for Holocaust survivors affected by poverty, and Bring Change to Mind, a national nonprofit that backs the empowerment of the youth to end the stigma on mental health issues
Contributing to and supporting these organizations extends the film's impact beyond the four corners of the cinematic screen.
