The next time you need to use an avocado and it’s still too green, you can speed up the ripening process without sacrificing flavor or quality. To ripen your avocado more quickly, just put it in a paper bag along with an apple. Use a toothpick to poke the bag in a few spots and leave it sit at room temperature. Within 1 to 3 days, your avocado should be ripe and ready to use!
In case you’re wondering why this works, apples contain ethylene, a naturally occurring gas that speeds the ripening process in the avocado.
