Make your own copycat Lawry’s seasoned salt with this easy and delicious recipe. It adds great flavor to chicken, fish, homemade Chex Mix or almost anything!
Occasionally you may run across recipes online that call for seasoning salt – sometimes Lawry’s Seasoning Salt specifically.
If seasoned salt is something you don’t usually have on hand, you want to control the ingredients of your spice mix, or if you want to save a little money by making your own from spices already in your kitchen, we are here to tell you how to make your own seasoning salt with this Lawry’s copycat recipe.
I like that it only makes a small amount so that if it isn’t something you use regularly you don’t have to buy a whole bottle of something that will just sit on the shelf and go stale.
If you plan to be using the seasoning salt regularly, you can multiply the recipe by 4, 8 or however much you think you will use!
For anyone with health issues (or just wanting to make better health choices), by making your own seasoning salt you can adapt the recipe to your health requirements. You can reduce the amount of salt in the mixture or you can use a salt substitute.
You also won’t be adding the chemical that helps to prevent caking. (So keep in mind if you live in a very humid climate you might want to add some grains of uncooked rice to your shaker to prevent clumping.
This seasoning is used in the traditional Chex Mix recipe and is also good sprinkled on chicken or other meat, added to vegetables, etc.
It can add an extra dash of flavor to casseroles and even to egg dishes in the morning. One of my favorites is to make “smashed” potatoes in the oven with homemade Lawry’s seasoning salt on top!
This seasoned salt recipe is also delicious sprinkled on corn on the cob. With the combination of melted butter and the seasoned salt it is TOP NOTCH!
If you are making multiple spice mixtures of your own (or if you buy spices in bulk) these glass spice bottles have a shaker top built in.
They’re perfect for storing spices and they’re inexpensive too! They also make a great gift idea for anyone who likes to cook OR for those learning to cook because seasoning salt makes anything taste better with no effort required!
For a super easy way to fill your spice bottles, use a Silicone Mini Spice Funnel. These have a no-clog large bottom opening for fast pouring.
I have tried in the past to just pour spices directly into the bottles or to use a piece of paper I have folded into a cone shape and it can be a big pain in the neck.
The funnels make it a lot easier and they can be repurposed for other things in the kitchen like combining other spices or condiments.

This may be a terrific seasoned salt, but Lawry’s does contain celery salt (or seed).
Robin says
Why cornstarch?
Chrysa says
Like in the bottled Lawry’s the corn starch helps the seasoning “stick” to the foods its used on.
Steve O says
What type of salt? Table salt, kosher salt, sea salt? 2 tablespoons of kosher is very different from 2 tablespoons table salt, etc. Thanks! My wife loves seasoning salt so I’m always looking for new recipes to try.
Dennis says
what does the cornstarch do? It’s just that almost all cornstarch is made from GMO corn and nobody should be eating that Frankenstein food.
Chrysa says
The cornstarch helps keep it from caking. You could leave it out, but if you live in a warmer climate it may cake together a lot sooner.
Rhonda says
You can buy organic non gmo cornstarch.
glenn bennett says
you know, you can buy Lawry’s salt so cheap at Sams or Costco…..why?
Chrysa says
As I mentioned in the post, it’s good when you only need a couple of tablespoons and don’t want a whole container that will take up space/get wasted. Also, when you buy the prepackaged it has preservatives and other fillers that some people try to avoid.
Sherri says
Because people like me are very limited on salt intake a day. I can chose to make this without all the sodium, others are very sensitive to MSG. For us, it’s not about saving a penny, it’s about staying out of the hospital.
Chrysa says
You make excellent points, Sherri! Hope this recipe helps you. It can be tricky when we have specific dietary requirements!
Carly says
I have the same problem. Lemon pepper, for example, is full of salt. I found some without it and its great. I thought I would do this the same way…seasoning but no salt.
Pam says
How did your salt free version turn out? My dad puts Larry’s on EVERYTHING lol and he has recently had to cut salt completely out.
Geri says
Because I don’t want all of the preservatives and chemicals in it. There’s a good rule of thumb. If you see something on the Internet that you don’t like or don’t want, just scroll on past..
Chrysa says
Well said, Geri!
Dee says
Thank you Chrysa,
For sharing this recipe, which I personally was looking to find.
Gloria says
This is great for people who don’t live near Sam’s or Costco.
Leigh says

Dolores Brister says
Thanks! I LOVE Lawry’s Seasoned Salt. I wonder if I can use a sugar substitute like truvia and how it would work out in it’s place.
Chrysa says
I would think that would work. It’s worth a try to make since it would only cost a few cents!
Laura says
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just had to throw out a big container of Lawry’s.
