Easy to Make – No cooking is needed for this recipe. It’s basically a matter of just mixing it up.
Simple Ingredients – All of the ingredients can easily be found in your grocery store. If you like, you can even skip the step of making your own whipped cream and substitute already prepared whipped cream. (See pro tips below.)
Versatile – While the recipe is perfect as-is, you can use some of the variations or topping ideas below to change it up a bit.
🧾 Ingredients Needed
- Cream Cheese – Bring to room temperature to soften before mixing.
- Heavy Whipping Cream – Keep the cream chilled until the last minute before you need it.
- Confectioners Sugar – AKA powdered sugar, this is what gives the dip its sweetness.
- Hot Chocolate Pouches – Any brand is fine. They’re all roughly the same size.
- Mini Chocolate Chips – Opt for the mini chips instead of full size, which tend to be a bit too big for dipping.
- Mini Marshmallows – For topping and to make sure your dip looks like a cup of hot cocoa.
📌 Be sure to see the recipe card below for the full ingredients list with quantities and step-by-step instructions!
🔁 Variations
For a bit of a lighter alternative, you can use Neufchâtel cheese in place of the cream cheese. You can also use half & half in place of the heavy cream.
We used regular milk chocolate hot cocoa, but you can opt for dark chocolate or any other flavor.
Besides or instead of chocolate chips you can stir in crushed peppermint candies, mini M&Ms, chopped nuts or toffee bits.
If you like a dip without chunks, you can use chocolate shavings instead of the mini chocolate chips.
Besides mini marshmallows for topping you can include shaved chocolate or sprinkles.

3 Ingredient Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe
If you don’t want to use packets of hot chocolate mix, it’s easy to make your own. Just sift together 1 cup of powdered sugar with 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder and then whisk in 1 cup of instant nonfat dry milk (aka powdered milk.)
